What is Aspergillosis?

Aspergillosis is an infection caused by Aspergillus, a common mould (a type of fungus) that lives indoors and outdoors. People with lung diseases or with weakened immune systems such as those whom have had a stem cell transplant or organ transplant or are getting chemotherapy, are at a higher risk of developing severe health problems (called Aspergillosis or farmer’s lung) due to inhaling Aspergillus spores.

Demolition or refurbishment work, particularly of older buildings, can release fungal spores into the air. Therefore, particular care and attention is necessary to monitor Aspergillus during construction work where there may be vulnerable members of the public – e.g. hospitals or care homes.
